During a Bay Day, I overheard an interesting conversation between a young girl and her daddy. I was sitting in my normal spot by the water meditating and to my right I wanna say it was a Middle Eastern family maybe Indian. I don’t know for sure, but they were brown skinned and definitely weren’t culturally indigenous to this side of the globe. The daughter was probably around seven years old. If she was older than that, she was very childlike in a good way. Then there was the father, mother and I want to say, the grandfather. I couldn’t really tell if he was the maternal or paternal grandfather, but he was a grandfather nonetheless. The little girl wanted to go into the water. The Water was beautiful. It was overcast and a little chill in the air, but the water was absolutely beautiful, so she took her shoes off and proceeded to walk in ankle deep while her dad was standing on the edge. The mother was taking pictures and the little girl kept saying ‘daddy come in, daddy come in the water!’ His response was like, ‘no, I am good here.’
I was really trying to pay attention to my own meditation and not pay attention to them, but the fact that she kept asking in a pleading innocent way, daddy come in the water with me, it’s fine and he was like no it’s probably too cold. She was like it’s really not cold once you’re in it it’s fine ( I’m choking up as I’m typing about it now). I didn’t look over at them, but I heard her keep asking. As I was giving my offering to Oshun and Yemaya, giving thanks for past and upcoming blessings, I silently said out loud ‘just get in the water with her. You will forever regret if you don’t get in the water with your daughter today’ (it made me realize how many of us daughters have begged and pleaded with our daddy’s to just get in the water; to take off their shoes relax for a moment; just take a moment to be with your daughter in the water, having childlike moments creating childlike memories for both the daughter and the daddy). When I was done, I turned around and looked over just in time to see that daddy is finally taking off his shoes and socks, and he’s getting in the water!! And THAT good folks, was all I needed to see. I didn’t stick around to watch them for long. He was holding her hand while they were walking in the water and she was saying ‘I told you daddy, I told you it was fine!’ At this point, I was able to pack up, give my final offering and return home.
Now, like I said, this all took place during my meditation time at the Bay. The funny part about this is that I came to the Bay earlier than my normal time because I knew if I didn’t go earlier, I wouldn’t make it. There weren’t a lot of people there for a change. The weather wasn’t conducive, but it was just right for me. For me to have witnessed that that exchange was the icing on the Blessing Cake served along My Alignment Journey. Asé
